Michaele Harrington

Artist

Michaele Harrington earned her MFA degree from the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore, MD. She studied fashion design and illustration as an undergraduate at the Massachusetts College of Art & Design in Boston, MA, and worked as a graphic designer, art director and freelancer until she retired to raise a family. Compelled by her creative demons to keep making art, she began painting in watercolor because the medium was safe to use around children and was easily put down to change diapers. Her water-based paintings and collage work were exhibited in national and internationally exhibitions, garnering positive reviews. Her work won an award at the New Orleans World Fair in Louisianna in 1984 and other paintings are in the permanent collection of the U.S. Coast Guard Art Program (COGAP) as well as private collections in the USA, Europe and Africa. Today, her paintings fit most comfortably into the lyrical abstraction and personal narrative categories. Her focus (when not painting, teaching or writing) is on sharing her art and design knowledge with her students and organizing her teaching into book form for future publication. Currently Michaele is a Smithsonian Faculty Teaching Fellow for 2011 in conjunction with The Paul Peck Art Institute at Montgomery College where she teaches as an Adjunct Professor of Art.
