Freda Warrington

Drawn to the mystical side of life from an early age, Freda Warrington was born in Leicestershire, England, and brought up in the beautiful Charnwood Forest area, where the ancient landscapes inspired a feeling for atmosphere and fantasy. She wrote her first story at the age of five. As an only child, prone to daydreaming, writing was a natural extension of her love of reading. She was educated in Loughborough and worked in graphic design and medical art, while continuing to write in her spare time.
Her first novel, an other-world fantasy called A Blackbird in Silver, was published in 1986 by NEL. It was followed by the rest of the 'quartet', A Blackbird in Darkness, A Blackbird in Amber and A Blackbird in Twilight. She moved into the area of 'contemporary' fantasy with such novels as The Rainbow Gate and Dark Cathedral. Freda is most proud of a trio of vampire novels - A Taste of Blood Wine, A Dance in Blood Velvet and The Dark Blood of Poppies - published to great acclaim in the early 1990s, now being re-published by Meisha Merlin. She intended the series to be as sensual as possible, creating vampire characters as diverse as humans to explore themes of passion, philosophy, psychology, love, sex, obsession. One reviewer said of the second volume, 'No finer vampire novel has been published in any century' and crowned her 'The true Queen of the vampire novel'!
On the strength of these, in 1997 Freda was asked to write a sequel to celebrate the centenary of the publication of Dracula by Bram Stoker. The resulting novel, Dracula the Undead, won the Dracula Society's award for Best Gothic Novel. Since then she's completed The Jewelfire Trilogy for Earthlight: The Amber Citadel, The Sapphire Throne and The Obsidian Tower. Her latest novel is The Court of the Midnight King (Pocket Books) - the fruit of her long obsession with the controversial, charismatic figure of King Richard III.
Freda still lives in Leicestershire and when not writing, she works part-time in the National Forest. In December 2002, she and her long-time partner Mike Llewellyn took advantage of Friday 13th to get married in Las Vegas (Elvis not included). Her interests are pretty much what you'd expect: witchcraft and paganism, art and books, Reiki, yoga, Arabian horses, all things Gothic, crafts such as stained glass, jewellery and teddy bears. Mike thinks her obsession with Buffy the Vampire Slayer is really sad.
