J A Coleman
James Coleman was born in 1920 in the Cotswolds and cycled several very hilly miles to the local grammar school, before starting a career in Local Government, a career that was interrupted by 6½ years in the Grenadier Guards, in which regiment he served with some distinction in North Africa and Italy.
After the war, he moved to Staffordshire, working for Cannock RDC and, in 1951 qualified as a Chartered Surveyor and married Merle, whom he met there He remained with the Council, reaching the level of chief officer, until reorganisation in 1974, when he retired to set up his own architectural and planning practice, which he ran successfully for 12 years. Finally, he put aside his drawing instruments in favour of a word processor, on which he has written some 30-odd (some very odd) books, mostly in dictionary format, many of them on crossword-related subjects, mythology, quirky humour and even quirkier clerihews.
